Swansea City A.F.C. vs. Liverpool F.C.
Premier League - 16 March 2015, 20:00 GMT (4pm US EDT) at the Liberty Stadium

Quote:

Liverpool return to action with a trip to Swansea City on Monday night. The Reds will aim to build on their 12-match unbeaten run in the Barclays Premier League and continue their push for a top-four finish. Earlier this season, the Swans were beaten 4-1 at Anfield by a rampant Brendan Rodgers team, while last season's corresponding fixture at the Liberty Stadium ended in a two-all draw.

This Is Anfield: Predicted Lineup For Swansea-Liverpool
Excerpt...
Quote:

Liverpool’s XI
With no worries over fixture congestion or juggling acts needing to be performed, Rodgers has the chance to name his strongest team and go all-out against the Swans, and that is exactly what the Anfield boss should do. A return to the first choice three man defence of Can, Skrtel and Sakho in front of the revitalised Simon Mignolet should materialise, and the recent productive midfield consisting of the dominant Henderson-Allen partnership can resume duties behind a fully explosive front three of Coutinho, Sterling and Sturridge.

That would see three changes made to the team that started against Blackburn a week ago, and the full-strength Reds would look like this come kick-off time at the Liberty Stadium:

However, Rodgers could choose to stick with those who have done a good job over recent fixtures for the trip to his former club – retaining a familiar look from over the last two matches. That would see Lovren keep his place in the back three, Sterling continue at right wing-back keeping Markovic on the bench, and allowing for Lallana to share attacking midfield duties once again alongside Coutinho and behind Sturridge.

If Rodgers opts for consistency with his starting team in keeping with recent selections, the Reds could look like this come 8pm Monday night:

With the chance to gain and make ground on top four rivals as well as second place surprisingly creeping into view, it’s essential the Reds remain focussed and produce another strong display in order to return to Merseyside with another huge three points.

Current Premier League Table as it stands (European positions):
Posted Image

-For Swansea, the equation is simple: win and they leapfrog Stoke into 8th on 43 pts
-For Liverpool, the equation is equally simple: win and they draw back to within 2 pts of Manchester United, which means that in their next match against the Red Devils' would see Liverpool move into a Champions League position and United fall into the first of two Europa League positions*

* - at present, the table above only shows one Europa League position; since Chelsea has already won the League Cup (which awards a Europa League berth to its' winner), the next team not already qualified for Europe gets a berth into Europa League action...at the moment, Southampton would be the second Europa League club from England to qualify. There is also the possibility that, should England be one of the top-three nations in FIFA's Fair Play Rankings, the Premier League could receive a third Europa League berth, which at present, would go to Tottenham Hotspur

Premier League preview
Swansea v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

--There is not just FA Cup action on Monday evening - there is also a key Premier League match with Swansea hosting Liverpool in a game which you can hear live on 5 live sports extra from 19:45 GMT.
Here are some key facts ahead of the game: (1)Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 league games (W9, D3). They are the only unbeaten team left in the Premier League in 2015.
(2)Swansea have beaten Liverpool only once in seven matches (D3, L3) since winning promotion to the Premier League in 2011 and Brendan Rodgers was the Swansea manager for that sole Premier League win, a 1-0 triumph at the Liberty Stadium in May 2012.
(3)Rodgers won 36 of his 84 league matches as manager of Swansea, guiding them to promotion to the Premier League in 2010-11.
(4)Swansea have only lost three home matches this season, and 25 of their 40 points have come at the Liberty Stadium.

Jonjo the nosey neighbour

--If Steven Gerrard was watching Football Focus on Saturday he may have been tempted to buy some new curtains. Why? Well his former team-mate turned Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey told the audience all about living next door to the Liverpool captain in Formby. "It was a bit mad to be honest with you," Shelvey said. "I've gone from living in a three bedroom council house with my brother, sister, mum and dad to living in Formby next to Steven Gerrard. From my bedroom you could see into the back of his house and I was always looking."

It sounds like you were too eager to learn Jonjo. We only hope you do not own binoculars. Shelvey has all the makings of a villain in this story, he even stalks his prey.

The perfect villain

--You can almost see it now. The final minute of his final league game, Steven Gerrard has a chance - probably a volley - to bank Liverpool a Champions League place, his parting gift if you will. Swansea City have the chance to rip up - or at least do serious damage to - the script tonight and what if, as is so often the way in dramatic productions, Gerrard used to live next door to the one who would ultimately dash his dream ending? Could his old next-door neighbour Jonjo Shelvey be lurking in the shadows to deliver an early plot twist?

Team news - Swansea City v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

No one in Liverpool's squad has a "God-given" right to walk into the team according to manager Brendan Rodgers and the clubs' most recent incarnation of a higher being - Steven Gerrard - experiences the full reality of that mantra tonight. Gerrard is on the bench despite being available for the first time since 10 February after recovering from a hamstring injury. Swansea City make just one changes as Jordi Amat replaces Federico Fernandez, who has returned home for family reasons.

--Swansea City XI: Fabianski, Naughton, Amat, Williams, Taylor, Ki, Cork, Shelvey, Sigurdsson, Routledge, Gomis.
--Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Allen, Henderson, Lallana, Moreno, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge.

"Not many teams come to Swansea and win. They're already on 40 points. They want to beat their Premier League record of 47. Liverpool will have to be at their best tonight. Steven Gerrard is professional enough to appreciate that he's been out for a month and Liverpool have done very well. He can't just walk back into the side in the form that they're in."

Elsewhere in the Premier League....
Poyet departs at Sunderland
Quote:

Elsewhere in the Premier League today the big news comes from Sunderland, who have parted company with manager Gus Poyet.
Chairman Ellis Short cited a lack of progress at the Stadium of Light. The club's former striker Marci Gabbiadini tells BBC Radio 5 live: "It's a difficult time to make a change. He could have maybe got away with it but some of the things Gus has been coming out with have been a bit puzzling lately. It's like he almost talked himself into the sack. I think most people in Sunderland realised he'd possibly be going in the summer but after the performance on Saturday, I don't think the players believed in the manager anymore."

Swansea City supporter Abigail Davies, a recent contributor to the club's 'Jack to a King' film: "It's easy to forget that this is Garry Monk's first full season in management. He's adapted remarkably well to the position and assembled a strong side with an ability to play in a more versatile manner than we've been accustom to seeing from the Swans since entering the top flight.

"As well as the free-flowing passing movements that have served Swansea City so well in the past, there is now a steely grit about the team that makes them difficult to break down and beat. A far more astute outfit, far less predictable and where under other managers the team has faltered and struggled when allowed little time on the ball to dictate play, they now look to other outlets and means to grind out a result, a feat that I'm sure will help the Swans surpass previous Premier League records."

They say a picture tells a thousand words.

As this new generation of Swansea City fans look on as a man who has led an entire generation of Liverpool fans wanders past, one wonders what must be going through his head. Rarely has a Premier League player had such a high profile, but would he have ever envisaged bowing out of the game in England as a squad player? Steven Gerrard is on the bench for Liverpool for the third time this season. Only in 2011-12 was he named as a substitute more times than in the current campaign (six)

Slick under foot
Swansea City v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

It is raining at the Liberty Stadium. Lots of the wet stuff falling which should make for a slick surface, ideal you may think for two sides who tend to want to pass the ball. Liverpool go through some final shooting drills. Emre Can's hair gel stands up to the elements and not one hair, not one single hair, is out of place. Can has become something of a pin up on Merseyside.

Things to know about Liverpool

--If you find yourself in Liverpool and are one of those 'sign me up to local life' types while you're away, then indulge in a bowl of Scouse. The dish, which it is thought was introduced to the city by sailors, is a bit like a stew, with meat, vegetables and potatoes. It's essentially a dream on a could winter's day and locals sometimes accompany it with pickled beetroot or bread. Legend has it the meal turned Jonjo Shelvey from a boy to a man...

Swansea fans, need a carrot or spud to make that bowl of Scouse I've just mentioned down in South Wales? I can point you in the direction of an allotment. The club's old ground, The Vetch Field, is now a park and allotments in the middle of the city and it played host to many a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool fans. The Reds have three draws in three games at the Liberty Stadium but won just twice in their 10 league visits to the Vetch Field.

...from the BBC's Twitter feed....
-Jamel McFarlane: Man City will miss out because their form is really poor.
-Jack Richardson: Arsenal are in good enough shape for second or third now. Liverpool and United will scrap for fourth - with LFC coming out on top.
